Herlina explained that monitor lizards are reptiles that have a territory.He confirmed the allegation that the instincts of monitor lizards consider the Whoosh fast railroad area now as part of their habitat that has changed functions.
“It could be, even most likely yes. Lizard is an animal that has a territory. If the rail is built in their former habitat or cruising path, yes they will still pass there. They don’t understand the project boundaries or KCIC fences. For them, it is still the old house,” said Herlina.
Although monitor lizards are not included in the list of animals that are protected nationally, Herlina stressed that monitor lizards still have an important ecological role as a controller of rats and carcass cleansers.
“Although it has not been protected, it does not mean that the population is safe. The pressure of habitat, pollution, and conflict with humans makes the numbers more pressured in several regions,” he explained.
Pressure for more serious environmental mitigation
Herlina urged the KCIC to start seriously in compiling and implementing a comprehensive environmental mitigation system.He suggested that focus not only on the aspect of railroad technology, but also on animal protection.
“For example, making a fence that is really safe, animal monitoring systems (using a trap camera, motion sensor, or drone), and working with ecologists to make animal corridors or special crossing paths,” he said.
In addition, Herlina also highlighted the importance of transparency from the KCIC.”If there is an event like this, don’t be considered trivial. Because if it continues to be left, it can be dangerous for both, passengers and their units,” he concluded.
