Weaving
Batak is now not only present on cultural stages. Now, he goes further, entering the realm
fashion
Contemporary thanks to the collaboration between Tobatenun and five famous Indonesian designers in the program titled Ugari.
Entering the seventh year of his journey, Tobatenun marked an important milestone through Ugari, a word in the Batak Toba language which means ‘culture’.
Ugari is not only a celebration of achievement, but also a statement of vision, revitalizing Batak cultural heritage through a fresh and cross -disciplined creative approach.
In this program, Tobatenun took five designers and famous fashion labels in Indonesia.Starting from Amotsyamsurimuda, Carmel Boutique, Danjyo Hiyoji, Qanagara, and Eridani re -explore the beauty and complexity of Batak weaving.
This collaboration is a meeting point between tradition and modernity, as well as an invitation to see weaving as a language of expression that continues to develop.
Amotsyamsurimuda, Structural Design for Urban Men
Through a collection of capsules titled ‘Fuga: Sae Torus, Sae Jadi’, Amotsyamsurimuda presents pieces of male clothing that prioritizes structural silhouettes of the remaining ulos weaving. This collection represents the spirit of escape from conventional forms to contemporary expressions, but still respects the roots of tradition.
The name of this collection itself is taken from the Batak proverb which means ‘if made well, the results will be good’, so a reflection of a sharp and meaningful design philosophy.
Carmel, Silent Power Through Drops in Weaving
Carmel Boutique presents a more poetic and intimate narrative through a collection of decay in weaving. This collection interprets weaving as a legacy worn, not just seen.
The clothes in this collection celebrate the presence of strong women without the need for many sounds, representing the grounded softness and the strength that secretly forms the world.
Danjyo Hiyoji, Young Spirit in Young Laras 2025
With its unique and brave style, Danjyo Hiyoji gave birth to a young Laras 2025, a mini collection that unites a young spirit with culture.
Inspired by the remaining fabric training of Partonun (Woven Craftsmen) Tobatenun, this collection appears in the form of playful patchwork clothing, oversized silhouette, and a touch of natural colors such as sky blue, brick orange, and green leaf.
An invitation for the younger generation to love weaving in their own way.
Eridani, Modern Subtle in Tanatoba
Through the Tanatoba collection, Eridani paid homage to the strong character of the Batak weaving. This designer is known for his exploration of literature. This time, he used cutting, draping, and deconstruction techniques to produce modern but subtil silhouettes.
Ulos Sadum, Hiou Simakatakat, and Weaving from Samosir are processed into clothing with a clean design line but still carrying ancestral heritage aura.
Qanagara, Bohemian Anggun in Nataradja
The Nataradja collection from the Qanagara raised the gentle side and flowed the Batak literature, inspired by the summer nuances on Toba Island. With an elegant bohemian style and retro nuance in the 1970s, this collection combines wide pants, lightweight, and the colors of the earth with bright accents.
Each piece reflects free and poetic spirit, as well as being a rearrangement of weaving in modern lifestyles.
Not just a collaboration event, Ugari also introduced Tobatenun Studio & Gallery which now comes with a new face at Sopo Del Tower, Jakarta. This studio is a place for creative exploration as well as the center of education and preservation of the Batak weaving, both in terms of engineering and philosophy.
More than just fabric, Batak weaving, especially ulos yeast life, is a representation of plenary life in the Batak culture. With complex techniques such as mandatar, gatip, jungkit, to mangarapot, this fabric not only attracts visually, but also stores deep spiritual and social values.
Through Ugari, Tobatenun invites the public to see weaving not as inanimate objects, but as a work of life that continues to grow, done by many hands, imbued by history, and is now moving towards the future with creative actors across generations.
