Pigi Island, a hidden gem in the north of Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara (

On December 12, 1992, Pig Island was hit by a terrible tsunami which caused most of its territory to be “drowned”.The disaster claimed 263 out of 700 inhabitants and forced the government to evacuate all residents to Nangahane Village.
Even so, the unyielding spirit of the residents of Pigi Island is not extinguished.Some of them chose to return to the ancestral land and rebuild life from zero after being hit by the tsunami.
With local wisdom, they erected a house on stilts from natural ingredients, not far from the shoreline, as a form of adaptation to the potential for disasters in the future.
Now, more than three decades have passed, Pigi Island has risen as a stunning marine tourism destination.The former damage due to the tsunami has regenerated into a charming underwater paradise.
The fractures of the sea that used to be a silent witness to destruction, are now filled with coral reefs that thrive, become home to various types of fish and colorful marine biota.

The main attraction of the island includes a 100 meter long fracture gap with a depth of 10-20 meters, which offers spectacular views from a motorboat.Pig Island is one of the amazing underwater destinations in Sikka Regency.
Its underwater beauty which is rich in coral and exotic marine life makes the island of pigs the ideal location for snorkeling and diving activities, supported by extraordinary water clarity.

In fact, the enchantment of the underwater world of Pigi Island was once a historical background to raising the 75th Indonesian Independence Day flag by 22 Certified Local Divers, confirmed its status as one of Indonesia’s maritime wonders.
