And Cambodia has worsened in the past week.The two countries were involved in a shootout in several disputed border zones on Thursday, July 24, 225.
The Thai Ministry of Health reported 14 civilians and one soldier killed, as well as 46 people injured in the battle.The Cambodian government did not provide similar details, but a provincial official in Oddar Meanchey said one civilian was killed and five others were injured.
Tensions between the two countries have increased sharply since a soldier was killed in a shootout incident in the disputed border region at the end of May.The situation heats up earlier this week after Thailand accused Cambodia of installing land mines in the disputed area.
Both of these countries attract many tourists every year.The Angkor Wat temple complex in Cambodia and its capital city Phnom Penh became the main attraction, while Thailand was visited in cities such as Bangkok and Chiang Mai, as well as islands such as Phuket and Koh Samui.
Although these popular tourism points are not located near the border clash area, tourists must still be aware of the closure of the crossing between the two countries along with the increasing tension.
Firing near ancient temples and border closure
The shootout began on Thursday morning local time near the ancient temple of Prasat Ta Moan Thom, which is located along the border between the provinces of Surin, Thailand, and Oddar Meanchey, Cambodia.The two sides accused each other of starting the first shot, triggered an attack.
Further clashes were also reported to have occurred near the Prasat Ta Krabey site and along the border which separates the provinces of Preah Vihear, Cambodia, and Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand.Records in Thailand showed that civilians escaped the explosion and sought protection at the concrete bunker.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet claims that Thailand has targeted the Cambodian military headquarters in several locations.One of the six Thailand F-16 fighter jets launched an attack, destroying what Thai officials described as the Cambodian military target.
Thailand has ordered the closure of all crossings along the border along the 817 km bordering Cambodia, whose parts have not yet been set.
