, on August 1, Venice residents will take over the island by rent it for 99 years from Italy. They will start the project to turn the haunted island into a city park.
However, later this city park will only be opened to the residents of Venice and closed to travelers.
This was obtained after local residents against tight competition from property developers in order to ensure that Poveglia remains a public asset.
In 2014, the island with an area of 7.5 hectares was included in the auction list by the Italian Property Agency. This makes the island potentially taken by the developers because of its calm and strategic location.
Neri imagined the island was sold to the private sector, Patrizia Veclani formed a group called Poveglia per Tutti (Poveglia for everyone). The group tried to save Poveglia and other similar islands that were included in the auction list.
The group also managed to collect 460 thousand euros or around Rp8.8 billion. The funds are then used as rental fees.
“Open as anger, but psychological trauma when realizing that the city can be divided and sold to the highest bidder. It feels like Rome decided to sell Trevi’s fountain. Venice and the songs are a unit, inseparable,” Veclani said.
Veclani said that the plan to turn Poveglia into a city park is a small victory for local residents in seizing Venice from
Overtourism
.
It is estimated, 30 million travelers visit Venice every year.As a result, local residents are increasingly eliminated, which is now only less than 50 thousand people left.
“This island will never be as popular as other places. But maintaining this small space only for Venice is a victory,” he said.
The scary history of Poveglia stems from the plague of PES in the 18th century. When the plague attacks, the island is turned into a quarantine place for the crew who came from abroad and for people who were symptomatic.
In the 19th century, Poveglia became a mental hospital. This hospital is often restrained and is the target of experimental care.
The mental hospital was closed in 1968. Since then, Poveglia has become an uninhabited island.
