The origin of bad luck and cultural variations
According to Barry Markovsky, a professor of sociology at the University of South Carolina (USC), the origin of this superstitious is “unclear and speculative”.
Professor Markovsky argues that “bad reputation” number 13 can originate from contrast with the number 12, which is often considered a lucky number and is associated with “completeness” (such as the number of months in a year or zodiac).
Furthermore, he explained that the number 13 also has a negative connotation in Nordic and Christian mythological beliefs.
Airlines such as Air France, Iberia, and Ryanair are some examples that do not have a row of seats 13. In fact, one of Ryanair’s spokesman claims that this is a “American Manufacturing Tradition”.
Interestingly, the number 13 is not the only row that is eliminated.The number 17 is also considered to bring bad luck, especially in Italy.If written in Roman numbers (XVII), the anagram is Vixi – which means “I once lived” in Latin, implying “my life is over”.

United Airlines Polaris does not even have a row of 13 or 14, because line 14 is considered unlucky in China because it sounds “will die” in Mandarin.
