Not just a matter of appearance, a work can store deep meanings, especially if in it is embedded in stories about identity and culture.
This is the spirit raised by Tulola in the exhibition titled Kawan Nusantara: The identity held at The Dharmawangsa, Jakarta, on July 31-August 2025. Together with BCA and Pertamina, Tulola wants to invite the public to recognize its cultural roots through artwork,
jewellery
, and handicrafts typical of the archipelago.
Happy Salma, Founder & Creative Conceptor Tulola, said that the theme ‘identity’ was chosen because he believes that a person’s identity is formed from many things, ranging from history, life experience, family values, to social interaction.
“Through these works, we want to invite people to look back in, know themselves, and understand where they come from,” Happy said at a press conference at the location on Thursday (7/31).
One of the most stealing attention in this event is a collection of 12 limited edition bags exhibited in the form of art installations. These bags are not just ordinary fashion items, but
Art-wear
, a combination of art and fashion made through cross -field collaboration.
Some names involved include the Fashion Garden of Solo label, director Garin Nugroho through a short film called
Sinta’s anxiety
, and architect Trianzani Sulshi who explored the relationship between space and identity.
Sri Luce Rusna, Founder & Creative Designer Tulola also explained that this collection of bags was born from long research on the symbols of the archipelago tradition.
“We combine cultural values with contemporary designs, but still use traditional techniques. Our bag structures are designed such as story space, there are inheritance chapters, communities, new worlds, and legacy,” Sri Luce said.
Each bag is done entirely by hand by tulola craftsmen, using 92.5 percent pure silver which is then coated with 18 carat gold.
The process is not short, it takes about three weeks to complete one bag.
In addition to the bag collection, Tulola also launched an artwear identity jewelry series consisting of 41 items.Starting from earrings, brooches, circams, necklaces, to bracelets and items
One-of-A-Kind
, all made with a touch of hands and traditional jewelry techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation.
Not only showing off internal work, Tulola also took the nine local MSMEs that carry a similar spirit, maintaining local wisdom, but still following the times.
BCA, through the Bakti BCA program, also supports this event by presenting the Heroes of Heritage exhibition, featuring the works of two silver crafters from Taro Tourism Village, Bali, namely I Made Suama and Ketut Meat.In addition, four other business actors were also presented, ranging from natural color cloth crafters, Sinta Craft and Wastraloka UMKM, to make-up artist services from the BCA fostered deaf community.
EVP Corporate Communication & Social Responsibility BCA Hera F. Haryn said that such initiatives are important to ensure Indonesian culture remains alive and continues to grow.
“We are also proud to be part of this celebration. We want Indonesian culture not only to survive, but can also compete globally,” he said.
Through ‘Kawan Nusantara: Identity’, Tulola does not just sell works, but also convey the message that culture is something that is alive, can be brought in everyday life, and is worth celebrating proudly.Identity is not just a matter of who we are, but also how we choose to maintain and continue.
