Almost 80 percent
tourist
Southeast Asia said the United States (US) increasingly lost its appeal as a tourist destination.
This is due to concerns related to discrimination, violence of firearms, and high costs, according to a survey from
CNBC Travel
.
One in four respondents said that their interest in visiting the US had declined over the past six months.
They quoted concerns about the potential for discrimination, US government policies under Donald Trump, and violence of firearms as an issue that was more worrying than travel costs.
This survey involved 6,000 foreign tourists from Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia. The survey was conducted by the Milieu Insight Market Research Company from May 22 to June 10, 2025.
In the last few years there has been an alarming increase in firearms violence and mass shooting in the US.
Nearly half of the respondents surveyed claimed to have visited the US at least once in the past.
As quoted
CNBC
, around 55 percent of Singapore respondents said they were less interested in visiting the US compared to last November.Data shows, only 7 percent are now more interested in going there.
Interest increases from Vietnam and the Philippines
However, interest in the US actually increased in Vietnam and the Philippines.Specifically, 57 percent of Vietnamese citizens and 49 percent of Filipinos have expressed more interested in visiting the US than six months ago.
Travel experts suspect this might be caused by their diaspora in the US.
“Family ties, as well as the appeal of American pop culture, are still a driving force behind the desire of many people to come to this country,” said lecturer at James Cook University in Singapore Zilmiyah Kamble.
