Authorities in North China reaped public criticism after two janitors were forced to earn tons of garbage in the hot sun to take a smart watch owned by a tourist.
This incident occurred in early July 2025 when a female tourist who was traveling with her child to the city of Datong in Shanxi Province by train accidentally threw his son’s smart watch in a garbage bag left near their seats, according to

.
The function of tracking the watch then shows that the watch is still somewhere at the Datong train station.
Following up on his friend’s advice, he contacted the city government hotline the next day, hoping to get help to find the device, report

.
A state -owned environment company said that it had found that the watch had been put into a large container containing eight tons of waste material before being transferred to a landfill.
Two janitors were then instructed to filter garbage using empty hands under temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius to find the tourist watch.
After more than four hours, the watch was found. The tourist offers cash prizes, but according to China Daily, the janitor reportedly refused.
The Datong authorities then highlighted the story as an example of city hospitality, but the action immediately reaped online criticism, with many who accused officials of abuse public resources and ignored the welfare of workers for relatively cheap goods.
“I don’t believe they struggle for something that is only worth a few hundred yuan,” commented a netizen.
“I think as a rich and powerful man, I will buy a new watch,” wrote another.
Responding to the criticism, the authorities in the region convinced the public that the sanitation officers involved in finding the tourist watch would receive an award.
