Later, social media was enlivened by chatting about rice
fortification
.Many are curious, what’s the difference with
rice
ordinary, and why this product is considered important to prevent
stunting
?
By definition, fortification rice is rice enriched with additional vitamins and minerals. The common content added includes vitamins A, B1, B3, B12, folic acid, iron, and zinc.
The goal is simple, so that the rice that we eat everyday is not only a source of carbohydrates, but can also help meet the needs of micro nutrition.
Fortification system in food is also not new.Iodized salt, wheat flour, or vitamin A cooking oil is an example that has long been applied.
Rice was chosen because almost all Indonesians consume it every day.Logically, if the rice eaten has been enriched with nutrition, the community can more easily avoid the problem of nutritional deficiencies.
The World Health Organization (WHO) itself recommends fortification of rice with iron, vitamin A, and folic acid as a public health strategy in countries that make rice a staple food.
How to make
Fortification rice is not produced with mere “sprinkled with vitamins”.There are several methods, for example coating rice grains with a mixture of vitamins and minerals, or making artificial rice grains from nutritional enriched rice flour.
This grain is then mixed with ordinary rice with a certain ratio. The results look the same as ordinary rice, but the nutritional content is more complete.Consumers can process it in the same way as cooking rice in general.
Launching various sources, in Indonesia, the discourse of fortification rice has been around for a long time. But the distribution is not evenly distributed and is still limited to certain schemes, for example a food assistance program.
The challenge is indeed big: many small -scale rice milling that do not have technology to do fortification.
Even so, the experiments that have been done showed positive results.Studies in several regions find consumption of fortification rice can reduce anemia cases, especially in school children.
The crowd of conversation about fortification rice does make many people curious, some even skeptical. But scientifically, this concept is not new and has proven to be useful in a number of other countries.
The question now, can Indonesia make fortification rice a long -term solution for nutritional problems, or just a trend that only appears occasionally on social media?
