So far, there are five types of diseases known
diabetes
.But recently experts found that there were subtypes of type 1 diabetes in Africa Sub-Sahara and the US.
Experts identify new diabetes subtipes in sub-Sahara Africa and several groups of patients in the US.Dabelea Dana, Professor and Dean of Research Association at the Colorado School of Public Health, said this was the first study in several sub-Sahara African countries.
“We have conducted similar research in the US with various groups, but what’s interesting here is to be able to compare the results between Africa and the US,” Dabelea said in an official statement quoted from
IFL Science
.
Dabelea and his team examined 894 participants with diabetes who appeared at a young age from Cameroon, Uganda, and South Africa.
This finding was then compared with the findings in other studies for US citizens.
Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the body’s ability to produce insulin. The hormone insulin is important because it helps the body process glucose for energy.
Although still debated, type 1 diabetes is caused by autoimmune disorders that can have genetic roots. The pancreas cannot produce enough insulin because the immune system attacks the cells that produce these hormones.
When people suffer from type 1 diabetes, blood contains Autoantibodi Islet markers. The marker arises when the immune -producing beta cell in the pancreas is damaged.
The existence of this marker helps doctors distinguish type 1 diabetes from type 2 diabetes or monogenic diabetes.
However, researchers found 65 percent of people in sub-Sahara Africa diagnosed with type 1 diabetes had no marker. Then when compared to data in the US, the team found similar results even though the number was ‘only’ 15 percent.
“The identification of subtype [diabetes] is in the sub-Sahara African population and among individuals of African descent in the US shows the potential for ancestral or genetic relationships,” Dabelea explained.
He added that this finding highlighted that the need for alternative etiology in this group.Likewise it is necessary to understand a more in -depth understanding of the causes and strategies of prevention and treatment in the future.
