The phrase “died because of
broken hearted
“It might sound poetic. However, recent research shows that deep sorrow after loss of loved ones can indeed increase risk
death
in the long run.
Studies reveal that people who experience symptoms of extreme sadness after grieving, have a higher risk of death in 10 years after loss than those who experience mourning in a lighter level.
Research published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health was executed by a team from Aarhus University in Denmark. The study involved 1,735 participants who had just lost the closest person.
They were divided into two groups, those who experience severe sorrow symptoms and those whose symptoms are lighter.
The results are surprising. As many as 26.5 percent of the group that experienced deep sorrow died within a period of 10 years, compared to only 7.3 percent of groups that were not too affected.
The symptoms of severe grief in question include more than half of 9 indicators of sadness. There are also indicators of sadness such as, feelings of numbness emotionally, losing the meaning of life, difficulty in accepting reality, to confusion of self -identity.

, participants were asked to fill out the questionnaire when they first joined the study.
Then they were monitored again in six months and three years after loss. From the data, researchers map the path of sadness and their impact on their physical and mental health.
In addition to a higher mortality rate, participants who are classified as deep sorrow are also recorded more often accessing health services.
They use more antidepressant drugs, mental health services, and primary care than other groups.
“This group seems to have been in a vulnerable condition even before the death of a loved one occurs, so it requires special attention,” said Mette Kjærgaard Nielsen, lead author of studies and postdoctoral researchers at Aarhus University.
Nielsen added that factors such as low socioeconomic status, poor personal health, and high symptoms of depression and anxiety can worsen the sad reactions experienced by a person.
Even so, according to Sian Harding, professor of heart pharmacology emeritus from Imperial College London, researchers have succeeded in choosing the influence of grief itself from other risk factors.
“One of the important things of this study is its long -term perspective. We know that loss does have an acute impact on heart health,” explained Harding who was not involved in this study.
He added, emotional pressure due to loss can trigger various health problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure, increased levels of cortisol stress hormones, the risk of diabetes, and decreased mental health.
In the medical world, this condition is known as
Broken Heart Syndrome
or heartbreak syndrome. This condition is also called
Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy
Namely, heart problems triggered by severe emotional stress, for example because of being left by loved ones.
Interestingly, some previous studies even found that some people died right on the anniversary of the death of their loved ones.
“This discovery is a reminder for health workers that there might be an initial signal from family members who began to show distress even before their loved ones died,” Nielsen said.”Early intervention and support can be the key to rescue.”
