Then, how exactly is the law of eating alcoholic durian according to the teachings of Islam and the fatwa of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI)?The following will be discussed in full based on the provisions of the MUI and the views of the scholars.
Alcohol content in durian
Actually, durian fruit basically does not contain alcohol while still fresh and not yet perfect. However, when durian goes through ripe period or becomes too old, the natural fermentation process occurs in the fruit.
This fermentation converts some sugar content to alcohol. However, the alcohol content formed in durian is not known with certainty and is usually very small.
This natural fermentation also occurs in other fruits such as pineapple, oranges, and so on.Therefore, the existence of alcohol in durian is not from the process of making liquor, but the result of natural fermentation in ripe fruits.
The law of eating alcoholic durian in Islam
To determine the haram durian eaten or not, it is necessary to know first two types of alcohol known in Islam.Quoting the page
LPPOM MUI
, there are types of alcohol that are forbidden and not.
Alcohol that is forbidden is in the form of
wine
, tuak, sake, and other alcoholic drinks that are deliberately fermented to produce intoxicating effects. All types of khamar are haram, both drunk a little and a lot.
There is also an alcohol that is not forbidden, namely alcohol which is naturally present in ripe fruits and fruit juice products.Cooking fruits do not undergo a special intentional fermentation process to be intoxicating.
“According to the rule of fiqh, khamar, many or at least, the same law: haram. There is no doubt, there is also no bargaining,” wrote LPPOM MUI.
However, Imam Abu Hanifah has a slightly different opinion.According to him, Khamar must contain alcohol. But not all alcohol can be called khamar.
One example, namely ripe durian which contains alcohol or ethanol due to the natural fermentation process.Similarly, fruit juice that is said to contain natural alcohol.None of the scholars forbid durian and other fruits.
