Excessive drowsiness even though sleeping is often considered a fatigue effect after a day of activities.However, if this condition lasts almost every day, it should be noted because it can be an early sign of diabetes.
Specialist Internal Medicine Disease Metabolic Endocrinology Consultant and Mayapada Hospital in South Jakarta, dr.Herry Nursetiyanto, explained that excessive sleepiness is a symptom that is often experienced by diabetics, especially when blood sugar levels are not stable.
“If blood sugar is too high (hyperglycemia), the body removes glucose through urine (glycosuria), resulting in a lot of the body loses fluids, thickened blood, and oxygen to the brain decreases, until the body feels tired and sleepy,” he said in a written statement, Thursday (8/28).
Conversely, when blood sugar levels are too low (hypoglycemia), the brain lacks glucose as the main source of energy.This can even interfere with the function of brain nerve cells (neuroglycopenia), which cause symptoms such as trembling, sweating, hunger, and heart palpitations.
According to Dr.Herry, if the symptoms occur slowly, especially at night, and not treated immediately, can cause severe fatigue, confused, sleepy, to fainting or commas.
He continued, sleepiness that appeared continuously after sleep could be an early sign of diabetes, especially if there was a family history of similar diseases.
Other symptoms that need to be considered include frequent thirst, frequent urination, easily hungry, blurred vision, weight loss dramatically, difficulty concentrating, and weakness throughout the day.
In the long run, uncontrolled diabetes can cause complications, one of which is damage to autonomic nerves that function to regulate the body’s mechanism automatically, including blood pressure.
“When this function is disrupted, blood pressure can go down suddenly when standing (orthostatic hypotension). As a result, blood flow to the brain is reduced temporarily and triggers a feeling of dizziness, weakness, and sleepy,” added Dr.Herry.
He also reminded, although often underestimated drowsiness continues to potentially reduce the quality of life because it interferes with focus, physical activity, to daily eating patterns.
This condition can also be an early symptom of prediabetes or diabetes, which if not treated is at risk of causing serious complications such as difficult wounds, kidney failure, stroke, heart attack, to blindness.
Drowsiness due to blood sugar disorders according to Dr.Herry can be prevented by applying a balanced diet, adequate sleep, management of blood sugar, stress management, and routine physical activity.
